Christenings and Baptism

Christening is a really important moment in your child's life and so we will do everything we can to make it a special day.

We are delighted you are thinking about having your child Christened. If you want to find out more please pop into church for a chat over coffee. Our main Sunday service is at 10am and we have coffee at about 11-15am, or you can ring us or drop Godfrey an email.

What is a Christening service?

It is a service of celebration. During the Christening service your child will be named and baptised where someone starts off their journey of faith by declaring their commitment to Christ.  Parents and Godparents make a declaration on behalf of a child. The newly baptised child joins the Christian family and shares symbolically in the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Who can be Christened and baptised?

Anyone who wants to commit to trusting and following Jesus may be Christened and baptised.

The Church of England Christens children on the understanding that they will be raised in the Christian faith by their parents and Godparents.

During the service, parents and Godparents promise to help their child grow in faith, and to walk in the way of Christ, including joining in with the life and worship of the church.

When are Christening services held?

Christening services are held on the 3rd and 5th Sunday of each month at 12 noon.

Thanksgiving and naming services

You may prefer a service of thanksgiving for the gift of your child, which includes their naming. You (or your child) can always choose to have a baptism service later on.

Not just for children

If you weren't Christened as a child but would like to start your journey with God, please chat with Godfrey and we can arrange for a Baptism service.

Whether you are young or older, it is a special moment and we would be delighted to share in your celebrations.

How to book

To book with us, you need to live in the Parish of Southwater or worship regularly at our church. If you have a family connection with our Church we'd also be pleased to hear from you.

The best way to start the process is by coming to church on a Sunday morning and you can talk to Godfrey over coffee after the service. You need to complete and return the baptism application form and, after a period of preparation, a date can be booked.

As preparation for the baptism, we ask you come to church as often as you can. You can get to know us better and find out for yourself how we can help you fulfill the promises that you will make to be faithful in public worship and private prayer.

We look forward to welcoming you and celebrating with your family!

Godparents SundayGodparents are special

We hold a special service each year to celebrate Godparents and Godchildren - no matter how old or young you are!

Godparents' Sunday is the day when we remember the start of that amazing journey in life from Baptism - and celebrate our Godparents. For generations, Godparents have been playing their part in family life, being there to support young people, helping out, praying for them, and encouraging them on their journey of faith. So this service is to help celebrate this very special relationship.

Everyone (even if you aren't a Godparent yourself) is very welcome to our special Godparents service.
